Sewing with stetch

My first try at sewing stretch fabric with a regular sewing machine. And I'm really pleased with the outcome!

A little trip to Spotlight and I found the fabric and the pattern. I thought as a first try I would keep it simple. Very glad I did.

I made the t-shirt on the right. It even looks nice on the pattern and that's saying something. They normally look fairly ordinary.

I will make two changes next time. Cut it out small not medium as it was pretty huge, and maybe next time don't use such a stretchy fabric. Something with a bit more hold would improve it.

The only problem that I am experiencing with it is that the neck edge is flipping inside out a bit. How do I alter that? Suggestions most welcome!

  1. Love the fabric choice. I too am starting to see with stretch fabrics for the first time. Chosen a pattern by Tessuti and trying Coco by Tilly and the Buttons. Will share how I go. The neck line...hmm could be it's too stretchy? Try using stabiliser beforehand? I'll check my "how to's" for you.

    1. Thanks Leah, any help would be great! Still can't quite understand why I'm making t-shirts when it's arctic outside... dreaming of summer obviously!

    2. Another good knit pattern to try are the Colette patterns. She's just put up a brilliant dress called the Myrtle. Thought I might give it a go. Will have a look at Tessuti and Tilly and the Buttons too.

  2. Yay for stretch knits! Your top looks great :) I did a knits course a few years back and became addicted and now it's what I prefer to sew with if I can :) I second the stabiliser to stop it flipping out or you could try a top stitch along the neckline or even a stay stitch on it inside seam, really depends on the fabric and how you want it to look!
